DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 356 is a linear dividing engine used for marking pre-defined distances on various materials such as diffraction gratings, thermometer scales, rulers etc. This machine was designed and constructed by Louis Guillaume Perreaux (1816-1889), an ingenious Parisian engineer who constructed various precision machines and also invented a steam motorcycle. In this dividing engine, the marking head is moved by a long horizontal screw with a pitch of 0.5 mm whose orientation is indicated on a drum with 500 divisions. Thus the least count of this device is one micron. Besides there is a mechanism for controlling that the pitch is maintained and, if necessary, corrected. It is conserved in a wood and glass box.ISCRIZIONI
