DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 353 is a Schweigger galvanometer in which the current carrying coil has two windings which can be combined or used separately to create a magnetic field which causes two needles to twist a support wire and reach an equilibrium position. The two needles are in an astatic configuration: one N-S needle inside the coil and the S-N needle outside the coil which is subject to the return field. In this case the astatic configuration implies that there is no net effect of the earth's field and there is no need to align the instrument with the magnetic meridian or know the strength of the earth's magnetic field. The instrument is protected by a bell jar which fits into a circular furrow on the base which has three adjustable screws for leveling.BIBLIOGRAPHY
