DESCRIPTION

Electric hail machine is a demonstration of a hypothesis formulated by Volta as an explanation of hail. The machine consists of two parallel metallic planes enclosed in a glass bell jar which also contains several pith balls. The upper plate is connected to an external electrode at the top of the jar while the lower plate is grounded.

To make hail, the upper plate is charged by connecting to some electrostatic generator. The pith balls become polarized and jump to the upper plate where the become charged and jump down. Upon hitting the grounded plate, they lose their charge, polarize and jump up and so on creating an apparent hail storm.
