DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 289 is a simple polariscope composed of a tube mounted on a vertical brass base and supporting a rotatable mirror holder on each end. The polarizer is simply a blackened glass plate which provides a polarized beam with the electric vector normal to the plane of reflection for certain reflection angles. At the other end of the tube there is another mirror holder with a screen which can rotate about the tube and thus attain different reflection planes. The main experiment shows how the maximum light is reflected when the two reflection planes are parallel and minimum when they are perpendicular.
