DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 13 is a Delezenne circle, a ring of soft iron on which is wound several turns of copper wire. Currents in the wire are switched each half turn of the ring (by sliding contacts) so as to be seen as unidirectional by a galvanometer attached to the terminals. The ring is mounted in such a way that it can be turned about an axle along its diameter by a belt driven by another wheel rotated by a handle about a axle parallel to the one supporting the ring. This apparatus was used mainly to demonstrate the presence of the earth's magnetic field.
