DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 108 is a double refracting plate inserted in a cylindrical brass mounting with a lens at one end. In practice an incident beam of natural, that is unpolarized, light will be observed as two spots, the ordinary spot and a displaced extraordinary spot. If the instrument is rotated, the ordinary spot should remain fixed and the extraordinary one should rotate about the ordinary one. If one interposes a polaroid (or other diachronic material) one observes the two colors due to the different wave lengths of the ordinary and extraordinary rays that are absorbed differently in the polaroid.Dati Catalografici
