DESCRIPTION

The Meyerstein inclination compass permits determining the magnetic inclination, the angle between the horizon and the earth's magnetic field, when in the plane of the magnetic meridian. To determine the magnetic meridian, the instrument is turned on the horizontal circle until the magnetic needle is vertical which means that the vertical circle is nornal to the magnetic meridian. Then the vertical circle is turned through 90° to be aligned with the magnetic field.

This adjustment is facilitated by a horizontal circle with a readout in degrees with a 30 pass vernier for 2-minute precision. Then the magnetic needle, protected in a transparent wood case, which can rotate about the horizontal axis follows the magnetic inclination which can be read by looking through the small telescopes incorporated in the vertical circle which is outside the box with readout in degrees and a 30-interval vernier for 2-minute precision. The instrument is mounted on three legs that can be adjusted to obtain planarity.
