DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 533 is a universal galvanometer of the moving needle type in which the current to be measured creates a magnetic field in which a magnetized needle will orient itself into a position of equilibrium between the induced field and the earth's magnetic field. Here the induced field derives from a vertical coil in which the current to be measured flows. It was designed by Giovanni Alessandro Maiocchi (1795-1854) who held the physics chair at Torino from 1851 until his death. It has a wood base with three adjustable screws for leveling weighted with a metal disk (perhaps of lead). To protect the instrument the base can support a glass bell jar. Under the support there is a screw for making a fine adjustment of the alignment with the earth's magnetic field.Dati Catalografici
