DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 36 is the well that Giovanni Battista Beccaria used to demonstrate for the first time that the charge on a conducting surface is entirely on the outside. It consists of a hollow brass sphere mounted on a glass column with an opening of about 5 cm at the top.

To demonstrate the effect, the sphere is charged and a pith ball is lowered inside until it touches the bottom. The pith ball is then extracted and it is found that it is not charged since all the charge is on the outside of the sphere.
