DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 488 is an instrument designed by Richard Threllfall and Arthur Pollock to measure rapidly variations of g (the acceleration due to gravity) from place to place.
The apparatus consists of a small lever (MN), where M is heavier than N, soldered asymmetrically to a quartz wire (AB) placed in tension between two supports (design-1). At the end A of the quartz wire a torsion is applied to maintain MN horizontal as ascertained by observation through the telescope C and the necessary rotation of A is read on the graduated dial G which goes from -20° to 270°.

The apparatus rests on a marble base.
