DESCRIPTION

Exhibit 457 is a Mariotte bottle with a perforated tap in which is inserted a tight-fitting glass tube open on both ends. An exit tube with a valve is fixed to the bottle at a level below the bottom of the tube. In practice the bottle is filled with water to a level above the bottom of the glass tube. As water exits air enters and atmospheric pressure is maintained at the lower end of the tube provided no air can enter alongside the tube. Thus the flow is determined by the fixed difference in height between the lower end of the tube and the exit tube and is thus constant until the water level descends below the lower end of the tube. Then air enters through the tube and the flow is determined by the varying difference in level between the lower end of the tube and the lowering of the water level. For details, see Ref.1.
