DESCRIPTION
Exhibit 113 is the Botto electric motor, designed by Prof. Giuseppe Domenico Botto (1791-1865) and constructed by Enrico Federico Jest in Torino, one of the first electric motors. The motor is composed of three electromagnets, two fixed to the support table and also with fixed but different polarity, while the third located between the two can have its polarity inverted by a mercury bath commutator. With the current in one sense, the mobile electromagnet moves toward one of the fixed magnets and the commutator inverts the current so that the mobile electromagnet now changes direction. The resulting rocking motion is converted to a rotational one through a connecting rod-camshaft arrangement.BIBLIOGRAPHY
